1) Is a golf umbrella considered a golf club?

The answer is NO. A golf ball retriever or golf umbrella do not count as one of your 14 clubs. To be considered a golf club it must have a shaft, grip, and a club head. Rule 4-4 of the USGA states this if you wish to read more on this.

2) What are the advantages of using a golf umbrella?

  • Provide UV protection. Some models even have UV protection built in.
  • Can provide shade than can be up to 15 degrees cooler than standing under direct sunlight.
  • Keeps you and your clubs dry in wet conditions.
  • Can be used to help your golf swing.  Check out the video below for a great golf tip using a golf umbrella.

3) What to look for in a golf umbrella

  • Get a large size golf umbrella. This will provide maxium protection against the wind, rain and sun elements.
  • Find one that is wind resistance.  These golf umbrellas will not flip inside out during sudden wind gusts.
  • Try to find a fiberglass shaft as this will allow the umbrella to flex some during bad weather plus you won't have to worry about lightening.  This is why you don't want to get a steel shaft golf umbrella.
  • Find a design that you like that would work both on and off the course.
